5 out of 5 stars One Tough Cookie!   July 15, 2010
T. Jewell (Twin Peaks)
I have had mine for two years now. I'm a student in college, and this little baby is perfect for recording lectures. Also, I cut grass during the summer in the heart of Appalachia, which can get pretty rough sometimes, but this little thing doesn't seem to mind the heat, sweat, or the many falls that it has taken. I accidentally washed it in the washer last week, expecting it to never work again (that's a wash, rinse, and spin cycle) and it instantly rebuilt the library and continued to work, as if nothing had happened. Like the title says, this is one tough cookie! Definitely worth it. Also, there are no annoying programs like iTunes to contend with; it allows complete user freedom, syncing perfectly with Windows Media Player. Or, if you please, you can use the Creative Zen Organizer. Point is, it allows YOU to choose.

5 out of 5 stars Versatile   June 13, 2010

I've owned this product for about one year now. I use it primarily for listen to DRM protected audiobooks. The bookmark features makes it great for listening to audiobooks. The only issue I have is the Zen's interface is not the most user friendly. It can be difficult to find specific books or songs on the MP3 player.

5 out of 5 stars Creative does have great customer warranty service   May 7, 2010
Snowhawke (USA)
I bought one of these from Dell, and it died 4 months later. The battery went dead and would not recharge.

It worked great with Amazon Unbox. It has a bright, clear video, and the included playlist program was simple, easy to use. Adding music was a right click on the song easy thing. So I really liked this little player.

I found and used the easy warranty return at Creative. The link is below.

[...].

All they want is to fill out the form and mail it to them with a copy of your sales receipt. Their return email was within one day.

I received a replacement Zen in about 8 days that was dead on arrival. I emailed them back and received a reply the same day to fill out the form again and return the dead replacement. I returned the dead replacement zen and again, in about 8 days received another Zen. This second Zen worked fine. The replacement gets the remainder of your original warranty from the first Zen.

Don't be afraid to try one of these Zen players. Creative stands behind their warranty without a fight. All you need is your sales receipt.

2 out of 5 stars Creative Zen 8GB died within 2 years. Be aware non-replaceable battery in unit!   April 13, 2010

I bough the Creative Zen 8GB in February of 2008 and was really happy with the product when it arrived. I had read that many people had problems after they upgraded the firmware, so I avoided doing that. It was easy to use, load songs on, great looking video, sound, portability and decent battery life...at first. Within a few months it started to do strange things. My library of music disappeared right before I was leaving on a trip. It wound up that I needed to reset it and reloaded the music and it was pretty annoying. The battery life began to diminish and then I got the first sign of doom. A screen came up telling me to reload the firmware. I wound up reloading the firmware and it worked fine for a couple of months. Then it started dying randomly. Resetting itself, then working for a couple weeks, then dying again. Finally, it met its end. The screen went black and a blue light flashed at the side on and off switch. Then the screen went white and it went completely dead. I tried troubleshooting online to no avail. I wrote to Creative Zen support and they were typically annoying. Not addressing the problem and telling you to charge the unit, press reset button and reload firmware. All of which I had told them I had done. After two more emails they finally understood the unit was completely DEAD. I asked them if they sold replacement batteries and this was their response:

"With regards to your enquiry, I am sorry for the previous solution. Please be informed that, the Creative ZEN player has a non-removable battery...If the warranty of your Creative ZEN player had expired, I would not advice you to service this unit as it is out of the warranty period. It is more economical to purchase a new product than getting this unit repaired. In addition, the new purchase unit will come with a full 12 month warranty coverage. "

Wow, not a great solution. :(
My warranty expired and I have no intention of buying a new unit for $140. It's up to you if you want to buy an mp3 player that works sporadically and dies within 2 years. Maybe, I just got a lemon, but honestly, I think the internal battery's life was up and there's no replacing it. I am afraid I can't recommend this product, though it was neat while it lasted.

4 out of 5 stars Decieved by SD card-Skidmark   March 3, 2010

I also was under the impression that the sd-slot would give me more memory. I have a 2G and purchased a PNY 4G thinking I could add memory on top of the 2G. But, the 4G works and adds more memory but I can only play single tracks from the card and not continuosly from the library. I use the player on my motorcycle and the bigger screen is why I use the creative products. Overall, their pretty good for the money. I now have an 8G on the way.
